Self- Assessment

Over the course of this class, I have found some things easy, and others more difficult. The reason that I took this class to begin with was to expand on my writing and figure out if I could really do something with this, if I possessed even the slightest bit of talent maybe I could figure this out, somehow. I have learned in this class that some of the best writing comes from some of the most honest and hardest parts that we hide from the world. The piece that I struggled the most with writing was definitely the memoir. I chose to write about my parents, particularly my mother, and how I felt it has impacted the type of parent I am to my daughter. When you write of events that have taken place in your life, you’re reopening wounds. I have learned though, that this doesn’t have to be a bad thing. This can help you process situations that you once only looked at as negative and you can attempt to see the beauty in it as you write something beautiful for others to relate to, hopefully. I also enjoyed writing the fiction piece. That was the most fun for me, especially experiencing the workshop process. I don’t typically share my writing with anyone so it felt nice to be the center of the conversation, receiving both positive feedback and constructive criticism. The poetry pieces were probably the easiest because I write poetry pretty often. Writing the monologue was an interesting process as well. I wanted to choose a topic that was relevant but also a topic that wasn’t too cliche. Domestic violence within same sex couples is an issue that many don’t realize exist. Toxicity in relationships period, is laughed at and joked about and being crazy is a very steadily revolved meme on social media and this isn’t good. That is why I chose to write my monologue from the perspective of a woman that is roped into a toxic relationship and I displayed the actual back and forth with ones self that takes place in a situation.

Over all, I have seen my growth in my writing from the start of this class up to now. I am a firm believer in the universe will unite everything in your world to teach you what you need to learn. This class fell in line with everything life is trying to teach me right now, and for that I am grateful.
